The only secure way to erase your drive is by overwriting the previous data patterns. If you don’t take the extra measure to make sure to erase the drive thoroughly someone could use data recovery software to recover the old data that is still on the drive. MediaTools Wipe allows you to select any sector data pattern to wipe the drive, from a simple numeric value (0, a hexadecimal value- 0x3F) or a big long text string.

Disk Wipe Status

MediaTools Wipe uses your system’s full performance to perform a thorough disk wipe – maximum amount of data in minimum time. The essential design choice to use a multi-process architecture means multiple CPU cores and I/O channels are automatically utilized by the operating system, again helping to maximize the data throughput of your system.

Wipe Pattern Comparison

MediaTools Wipe also offers a Verify option. After performing the complete disk wipe, the software then reads the entire drive comparing it to the wipe pattern, any failed comparisons are shown. This helps detect drives that may be malfunctioning and helps assure information is positively being written to the drive.

Seamless Multi-Drive Operation

The powerful disk wipe software, MediaTools Wipe, works with any IDE, SATA, USB, eSATA, or Firewire connected disk or flash drive that is accessible by the operating system. External hot-swappable multi-drive enclosures work seamlessly, completed drives can be removed and new drives added without interrupting ongoing wipe operations and allowing for continuous operation.

Secure Erase Options
There are a variety of options that may be selected and used during a secure erase operation.

What is a secure wipe and how is it different from a normal file deletion?

A normal file deletion is when a file gets moved to the trash and then the contents in the trash bin get deleted. This is not the safest way to delete data. Someone could potentially run data recover software on your hard drive and recovery those files you deleted. The best way to permanently erase data is to perform a secure erase. A secure erase will write 1’s and 0’s across the hard drive. This will make it so the deleted files have permanently been overwritten. If someone were to now run recovery software on drive, they would not be able to find anything. A secure disk wipe is the only way to permanently erase a hard drive. MediaTools Wipe gives you the ease and flexibility to do this for up to 18 drives simultaneously.

Wipe Area

The wipe area option is used to select which area of a drive is to be wiped. The drop-down menu box let you quickly and easily select; the whole drive, one of the partitions that may be on the drive, or a custom area.

Fill Pattern or Patern File

You can choose to have MediaTools Wipe use a data pattern when writing wipe data to the drive. The pattern can be a simple sequence of alphanumeric characters or you can use an exact sector pattern contained in pattern file.

Sectors Per Time

The user settable ‘Sectors Per Time’ value is the ‘chunk’ size that MediaTools Wipe will use each time it writes to the drive. This may be alter to the nominal value for a system/drive.

Wipe Method

This value can be selected to specify the method of the wipe. You may select from: Forward or Reverse.

Error Processing

This value is used to control whether the remaining part of a block write is skipped when an error is encountered or whether a re-attempt is made to write the remainder of the ‘chunk’.

Error Skip Size & Dynamic Error Skipping

These options are used in combination with the Wipe Method to direct how skipping is done when an error occurs in the wiping process.

Verify After Wipe

If this setting is selected MediaTools Wipe will verify all sectors are wiped by comparing the data read to what was written (the wipe pattern). Turning on Verify will essentially double the time it takes for a wipe operation to complete. The entire “write pass” (wipe) is performed first, followed by the “read pass” which compares the data read to the wipe pattern.

Ignore Write Errors

This On/OFF value is used to control whether MediaTools Wipe stops and waits for user input on each write error, or instead continues automatically after each error without stopping. This allows errors to be skipped over while still recording a complete list in the log file.

Ignore Read Errors

This On/Off value is used to control whether MediaTools Wipe stops and waits for user input on each read error, or instead continues automatically after each error without stopping. This allows errors to be skipped over while still recording a complete list in the log file. Only applicable for use during a verify operation.

Ignore Compare Errors

This On/Off value is used to control whether MediaTools Wipe stops and waits for user input on each compare error, or instead continues automatically after each error without stopping. This allows errors to be skipped over while still recording a complete list in the log file. Only applicable for use during a verify operation.

Log File Viewing

A log file of the current operation can viewed at any time by pressing the SAVE button next to ‘Log File’. The log may be save to a file.

The Hex Viewer Panel

The Viewer Panel is used to examine sectors of data from a drive. The Viewer can be used to review, or monitor the wiping process. Any disk sector can be viewed independently of any ongoing operation.
